NIR Spectroscopy
Characterization of Wood Material.

Instrument

Near Infra Red spectroscopy in combination with multivariate data analysis is used for the characterization of wood raw material.

A direct light NIR spectroscopy instrument for characterization of core chips in a particle board plant in northern Sweden.

Spectrum

Changes in the spectral amplitude correspond to changes in  chemical/physical composition of the raw material, representing for example moisture content, type of species, maturity and particle size.

A typical NIR spectrum of pine particles.

Data Analysis

With BoardModelTM, changes in wood chip quality are easily monitored. This plot shows a PLS score plot of NIR spectra of core chips from a particle board plant. One can see that four groups representing spectra of chips with different moisture content and particle size are well separated.

size and moisture content in a particle board
plant.
